I tried http://homepages.cwi.nl/~fabian/troep/monetdb-1.6-jdbc.jar and get the same error. Logfiles are attached.
Same problem as before:

You don't even get to the UTF-8 part.
THis is indeed a problem on the server side. Not sure what yet.
Afcourse it strange to use prepare with out any parameters, ie '?' is not correct it should be ? I guess.
