How is a query with 'string' columns in it, gets executed?

Yes, MonetDB uses dictionary encoding for strings.

Concerning the usage of MonetDB, basically, all documentations we have are in  Concerning development, the code is (unfortunately) the best documentation.  Also, you can ask questions in the mailing list.
