Second, how does this relate to the SQL module's way of doing things?
If I recall correctly, Niels didn't do this "streamlining" because that
would be problematic in some way.  I guess, however (I like the
streamlining behaviour) that for consistency sql_server (and maybe
mapi/mil) should behave in the same way before the release.
