I am sure that "surviving" sounds a bit dramatic, don't you think? :)

Check the following Stackoverflow link where I asked the same question. My solution is not bullet proof, but it does a limited, yet a decent job. 

However this was done before functions were made recursive, maybe is more to explore there (are they? I read once they are, but I am not sure)

But is true, CTE is a nice thing to have.
