On December 15, the Stichting MonetDB Foundation is officially established by Dick Broekhuis and Niels Nes to ensure continued maintenance and development of MonetDB as an open-source and free software suite. The Foundation holds and manages the Intellectual Property of the source code and the architecture of the MonetDB software suite.
Our mission is to provide the world a robust and fast database management system with rich features to support a broad spectrum of data analytics applications for free.
To achieve this goal, MonetDB Foundation conducts the following core activities
Currently, these activities are enabled by in-kind donations of code, time and (cloud) hardware usage by our contributors and sponsors. MonetDB Solutions has donated a small amount to cover the costs of the initial establishment of the Foundation.
Next year, our first task is to continue the establishment of MonetDB Foundation, including expanding the board, formulating the policies and setting up the infrastructure for fundraising.
Secondly, we continue the development of MonetDB. Although the Foundation is newly established, the MonetDB software suite already has a long history of development. For 2024, we have planned many SQL feature extensions and security and performance improvement for MonetDB. For more details, please see the roadmap.
